PELAKITA.ID – Professor Jamaluddin Jompa is currently serving as the Rector of Hasanuddin University. He was officially inaugurated for the 2022–2026 term on April 27, 2022.
With a strong academic background, he earned his Ph.D. from James Cook University in Australia in 2001 and a Master’s degree from McMaster University in Canada in 1996.
His research has focused on the sustainability of coastal and marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs and the socio-economic aspects of marine protected areas (MPAs).
Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelagic state, is home to over 17,000 islands and some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet. However, increasing human activities, climate change, and overfishing threaten these ecosystems.
Professor Jompa has dedicated his career to addressing these challenges through research, conservation initiatives, and policy recommendations.
His contributions have helped shape better management strategies for MPAs and have provided key insights into the economic and social conditions of coastal communities reliant on marine resources.
His leadership extends beyond academia. From 2013 to 2017, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries at Hasanuddin University, where he promoted interdisciplinary research and sustainable marine practices.
Professor Jompa is also actively involved in international collaborations.
In May 2023, he visited Hiroshima University in Japan to strengthen academic exchanges and research partnerships between the two institutions.
His engagement in global forums, such as the Global Landscapes Forum and The Pew Charitable Trusts, underscores his influence in shaping sustainable marine policies and practices worldwide.
One of his significant contributions is the integration of traditional knowledge with modern marine science to improve conservation outcomes.
By working closely with local fishing communities, he has facilitated initiatives that balance ecological protection with sustainable livelihoods. His research on coral reef restoration and seagrass bed conservation has been instrumental in developing resilient marine ecosystems, vital for mitigating climate change impacts.
Indonesia’s marine sector plays a crucial role in its economy, contributing approximately USD 27 billion annually. However, challenges such as illegal fishing, habitat degradation, and pollution remain pressing issues.
Professor Jompa’s work aims to bridge scientific research with policy implementation, ensuring that marine biodiversity conservation aligns with economic growth and social well-being.
His dedication to marine ecology has earned him national and international recognition. He continues to advocate for evidence-based policies, capacity-building programs for young scientists, and collaborative research to protect Indonesia’s invaluable marine heritage.
Through his leadership, Hasanuddin University remains at the forefront of marine science and sustainability, positioning Indonesia as a global leader in ocean conservation.
As marine conservation becomes increasingly critical in the face of climate change, Professor Jamaluddin Jompa’s contributions provide a roadmap for balancing development and environmental stewardship.
His work not only safeguards marine ecosystems but also empowers communities to thrive in harmony with nature, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
