PELAKITA.ID – Makassar, 9 December 2025 — The Center for Climate Change Studies (PSPI) of Hasanuddin University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment (KLH) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), today conducted a capacity-building session for students participating in the Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) on Climate Change.

Carrying the theme “Multi-Stakeholder Synergy in Formulating Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Programs in Makassar City: From Regional Policy to Coastal Community Action,” the program aims to prepare students to serve as catalysts for climate action at the grassroots level.

The event, held on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, opened with keynote remarks from Nila Puspita, representative of HSF; Ir. M. Rijal Idrus, MSc., PhD, Head of PSPI Unhas; and Ir. Sahriyanti Saad, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., Director of Educational Transformation and Learning Innovation (TRANSDIVA), Hasanuddin University.

Strengthening Capacity Through Science and Policy Approaches

During the morning briefing session, moderated by Zabhika Dinda Istnaeni, S.Pi., M.Si, students received in-depth material on global and national climate frameworks. Irawan Asaad, ST., M.Sc., Ph.D from the Ministry of Environment outlined the strategic role of students in supporting Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Climate Village Program (ProKlim).

Prof. Nita Rukminasari, S.Pi., MP., Ph.D further enriched the discussion by presenting ecosystem-based adaptation strategies for coastal areas, including mangrove restoration and Climate-Smart Aquaculture.

This session was particularly crucial given that the students’ fieldwork areas are located in climate-vulnerable coastal zones.

Regional impact analysis was subsequently presented by Andi Haerul, S.Kel., M.Si and Andi Annisar Dzati Iffah, S.Kel., M.Si, highlighting projections of sea-level rise and the growing threat of extreme weather events in Makassar City.

The technical briefing concluded with guidance on program methodology and sustainability, delivered by Dr. Athira Rinandha and Dr. Ir. Syarifuddin Mabe Parenreng, ensuring that student initiatives include clear exit strategies and long-term impact planning.

National Dialogue: From Theory to Real-World Action

In the afternoon, the program continued with a “National Dialogue on Climate Change,” reopened by Irawan Asaad, Director of Resource Mobilization for Climate Change Control. Moderated by Wisnu Murti, S.Hut., M.Ec Dev, MPP, the forum featured practitioners sharing best practices from the field.

Speakers included Yusran Nurdin Massa, S.Kel., M.Si, Head of the Blue Forest Foundation, who elaborated on technical aspects of coastal ecosystem restoration.

Students also learned directly from local community initiatives, including the Rammang-Rammang River Children Community, which shared experiences implementing ProKlim actions, and Andi Nurdianza from the Makassar City Environmental Council, who discussed waste management strategies through Waste Banks.

Through this capacity-building program, it is expected that Hasanuddin University’s Thematic KKN students will not merely fulfill academic requirements, but will serve as an effective bridge between government policy and the adaptive needs of coastal communities in Makassar in responding to the climate crisis.
