Strengthening Fisheries Governance: Appointment of New Harbour Masters to Support Sustainable Fishing Ports

PELAKITA.ID – The Harbour Master in a fishing port is not only responsible for the safety and security of fishing vessel operations, but also supports the continuity of fishing businesses and the enforcement of fisheries regulations at the fishing port.

On Thursday, 31 July 2025, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries appointed 30 new harbour masters, who were inaugurated by the Director General of Marine Transportation and the Director General of Capture Fisheries.

The total number of harbour masters has now reached 197, serving fishing businesses in more than 600 fishing ports.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation, Indonesia will increase the number of harbour masters in fishing ports. By the end of this year, we will train 78 fishing harbour candidates, who will be on duty in the second semester of 2026.

The appointment of new harbour masters is expected to strengthen port management, improve vessel monitoring, and ensure compliance with national and international fishing regulations.

Their role is crucial in supporting sustainable fisheries, preventing illegal fishing practices, and facilitating better services for fishers and fishing companies.
