PELAKITA.ID – The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Hasanuddin University, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Sociological Association (APSA), successfully organized the APSA 2024 International Conference with the theme “Global Resilience: Thriving Amidst Planetary Challenges for a Sustainable Future.”

The conference took place over two days, from October 26 to 27, 2024, at Unhas Hotel and Convention, Tamalanrea Campus.

This event brought together experts from various countries, including Japan, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, and Indonesia, to discuss crucial issues in the field of sociology.

As a leading association of sociologists in the Asia-Pacific region, APSA provides a platform for academics, professionals, and researchers to share insights and solutions related to diverse and complex global challenges.

The event was officially opened by the Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc.

In his opening remarks, Prof. JJ expressed deep appreciation for the presence of international speakers who shared their expertise.

“I am delighted to welcome experts from various countries. Today’s global challenges demand interdisciplinary collaboration so that we can better understand and address increasingly complex social issues,” he stated.

Prof. JJ also emphasized the importance of global resilience in responding to the continuously evolving planetary challenges.

“We are facing interrelated issues, and this conference is expected to be a platform for exchanging strategic ideas. I hope the attending sociologists can formulate impactful programs that benefit society at large,” he added.

The opening ceremony also included the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Hasanuddin University and APSA.

This agreement is expected to strengthen academic cooperation in various research projects and the advancement of sociological studies.

Through this international conference, Hasanuddin University aims to expand its network and enhance sociology’s contribution to addressing global challenges, with the aspiration of creating a more sustainable and resilient future.

The Chair of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Sawedi Muhammad, M.Sc., expressed Unhas’ pride in hosting APSA 2024.

Unhas is the first university outside Java Island to host the APSA conference—a historic achievement that solidifies its position in this prestigious academic event.

Held biennially, the APSA Conference not only serves as a forum for knowledge exchange and research discussions but also determines the next host country for the upcoming APSA conference.

APSA President, Prof. Dr. Emma Porio, stated that the discussions in this conference have provided extraordinary inspiration for young scholars. Amid increasingly complex global challenges, Prof. Emma highlighted the crucial role of the younger generation in strengthening resilience and advancing sustainability.

She encouraged all participants to address these challenges through collaboration and continuous innovation focused on the future, aiming to create a positive impact on global society.

With the signing of the MoU, the collaboration between Unhas and APSA is expected to grow even stronger, opening broader opportunities for research partnerships and academic development that support resilience and sustainability. (*)
